Turcan’s political career has been fraught with controversy. Calin Popescu-Tariceanu was elected PNL President and Prime Minister in 2004. Her public criticisms of the party grew so much that the party sent her a warning in July 2006. She responded that she would make similar statements. The party fired her in September after she kept her word. She continued to attack Tariceanu and was a leader of a group PD-L deputies that in March 2008 requested prosecutors to investigate the prime Minister for abuse of office, corruption and attempts to impose an auto tax. (He has connections to the industry). A year later, Tariceanu declared that a united right-wing party encompassing both the PD-L & the PNL could be formed if he, along with a few others, left the PNL. She complained about Tariceanu, Olteanu, and Orban “monopolizing the party and eliminating anyone who dares to share a different point of view”. She was, however, a vocal supporter of Basescu who she noted shares the PD-L objectives and whose suspension she described as “a serious abuse”. She predicted that Crin Antonescu, the former leader of the PNL, would lose to Basescu in the 2009 elections and pointed out that the party could be marginalized if it continues its anti-Basescu strategy. Turcan supports the modification of the Constitution to increase presidential powers beyond those in a consolidated semipresidential system.
