She went to Bronxville High School and excelled in field hockey (she was a goalie) in addition to basketball (center) she graduated in 1974. She also participated in track and tennis. She graduated with the degree of bachelor of science in Columbia University in 1980 and was a Dean’s list student. She was an assistant nursing assistant for 6 months before she decided to change her mind after stating that she had “were a lot of frustrations.” She was a financial analyst for The Wall Street brokerage firm of P. R. Herzig and Company for 10 years.

However, in the 1980s and later women’s sports were growing in popularity. Marshall’s first event was a qualifying event to the 1979 Empire State Games in White Plains, New York. Marshall won her first national championship in the year 1981. In in the 80s Marshall was a winner in her class 6 times in seven, and established the national record for 45 times. The year 1983 was the first time Marshall received information from the men’s coaches Mark LeMenager that the women’s weightlifting record was established 75 years earlier when Katie Sandwina, a circus performer, lifted 130-kilograms (290 pounds) overhead. According to Drechsler the record set by Sandwina was the catalyst that pushed Marshall to push herself harder. Her program of training consisted of “more squatting, pressing and other strength building exercises.” The year 1984 was the time she was able to get to the Guinness Sports Record Book with 289 pounds (131 kilogram) clean and jerk, which is an Olympic event with the two-stage lifting of a barbell over the head of the athlete. The lift was higher than that of the Sandwina record. In 1984 Marshall was deemed the world’s best-known record holder for weightlifting for women with an 82.5 kg category in the light of her results of a competition held in Florida. As of 1985, Marshall took 329 pounds (137 kg) in the clean-and-jerk lifting. When she competed in 1987, which was the very first year there was a World Championship for women who weightlifted, Marshall competed for the United States against a surprisingly powerful group from China. Marshall not only won the bodyweight class with a margin of 12.5 kilograms (28 pounds) however she also surpassed every athlete in the category of unlimited bodyweight. She was the top performer in the competition and earned the title of the World’s Strongest Woman. In the Guinness Sports Record Book credited her as one of the “world’s most powerful female” with her 303 lbs (137 kg) above the head. She was the winner of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship.
