He was the longest-running Elevator Constructors’ business manager Local 2 throughout its time. He was also the chairman of the Illinois Elevator Safety Board from its beginning in 2003 until 2013.

Christensen was a member of Christensen joined the Elevator Constructors in 1979 and was a part of their executive committee as well Vice-President for Local 2 from 1994 until 1998. Then, in 1998, he took over as the president of Local 2 and served in the office until his appointment as the business manager on September 15th 2001. He was elected to the November 20th Special Election as business manager and was re-elected for the full term of three years in 2002 as well as 2005, 2008, and 2011. As of 2005, Christensen received the honor of being named as Illinois Maritime Labor Man of the Year. For the 2010 General Election, Christensen ran unopposed , and was the longest-running business manager of Elevator Constructors Local 2 over the 114 years of its history. Christensen was also the Director of the Italian American Labor Council and was a member of several state and local labor councils. Christensen was an earlier member of the National American Society of Mechanical Engineers A17.1 Committee. He was responsible for the development of the first national QEI (Qualified Elevator) Inspection (QEI) tests program.
