She was named Chair of the SEC by President Barack Obama on November 26 2012, and was swearing in on December 14 on the 14th day of 2012. She was initially appointed the fifth of SEC commissioners by president George W. Bush and swearing in on July 9 in 2008. As a result of a presidential designation Obama the President later appointed her as Acting Chair from the month of January 2009. She was a commissioner of the SEC from August 9 to 2013, when she was appointed a Commissioner.
