Born in Santa Clarita, California, Benton was a senator of the Washington State Senate from 1997 until 2017, when he represented the 17th district of Washington’s legislature. He was his campaign manager of Donald Trump in Washington. In 2016, he was campaign director for Donald Trump. In 2016, after Trump won the presidency, Benton was appointed as an important White House advisor at the Environmental Protection Agency for a few weeks. However, he did not get along with the newly appointed head of the agency Scott Pruitt. In April of 2017, Benton was named by the president Trump to be the thirteenth director of the Selective Service System.
